Benefits of CA Glue in Lapidary

Lapidary is the art of taking, shaping, polishing and displaying stone, minerals or gemstones into decorative items. Lapidary stones come in all shapes and sizes and as you can imagine, it requires several tools, from saws and blades to chemicals and compounds, to create what you want. However, one often overlook item a lapidarist cannot leave out of their lapidary supplies, or indeed any stone carving supplies, is CA glue. Short for cyanoacrylat glue, this all-purpose super adhesive can be invaluable to any lapidary project for a variety of reasons.

What is CA Glue?

Commonly known by their trade names such as Super Glue or Krazy Glue, Cyanoacrylates (CA) are a family of strong and fast-acting adhesives. They do require some care and knowledge for effective and safe use, but because they come in three viscosities: thin, medium, and thick and are extremely strong and fast-setting, they are a vital tool in any lapidary supplies kit.

Uses for CA Glue in Lapidary

The most obvious use for a fast acting, strong adhesive when creating your piece of Lapidary decoration is, of course, to mount it. A small drop of CA glue on the backside of the gemstone or next to the prongs will not be seen when dried and will create a tight fitting seal. As CA glue tends to dry clear you can even use the thinner products to fill in any gaps between the stone and the mount for extra strength. It does not take more than a drop or two of ca glue to bond your gemstone to the setting and seal it so it cannot slip out

Another excellent use for ca glue is in the mending of cracked stones. Medium viscosity ca glue can also be used to fill in and bond any cracks in a slab before you trim out your cabs. Remember, ca glue is strong —that is why they call it super — so you do not need more than a drop or two to bond parts together and it will dry in anywhere from 10 to 25 seconds depending on the temperature of your room.

CA glue dries clear and hard so once dry you can buff it up to a good polish just like the stone and it will become invisible.

Not all stones make good jewelry. Some are too soft or are porous and you may be tempted to steer clear of them. However, CA glue can come to the rescue here too.

After you have carefully shaped your stone cover the entire surface of the stone with a thin layer of ca glue and allow it to dry. This will both strengthen soft stone and seal porous stone. Once dried, you can then buff your stone up to a polish just like you would normally.

Things to Remember

CA glue is strong and fast acting. Please use responsibly and keep out of reach of children. When using CA glue be sure to have some solvent handy in case you need to get the glue off your skin or anything else you don't want permanently glued to something else.
