Repair Piano Tuning Pins with Super Glue

What are Piano Tuning Pins?

Piano tuning pins are used to ensure that a piano is well tuned so unnecessary interferences do not occur. Piano tuning involves the assessment of the interaction of vibration among notes and proper alignment of the intervals between tones to ensure a piano is in fine tune.

If these tuning pins were to get loose, it is certain that the piano will no longer function properly since there will be discordance between notes and the result of the output will be affected by this malfunction.

Which Super Glue to Use When Fixing Piano Tuning Pins?

For repairing piano tuning pins, use thin ca glue. This water-thin glue is one of the thinnest glues on the market and can easily infiltrate through the pin holes and saturate the pin block. Regular super glue will be too thick and will not penetrate as easily.

How to Repair

For loose tuning pins in a vertical piano, it is highly recommended to flip the piano onto its back. Make sure to remove the action from the piano before you tip it over. For grand pianos, tilt it since you can’t flip it on its back. This will help make the application of the thin super glue much easier because it will naturally drip down the pin hole and guard against it dripping down the face of the pin block. Just to be safe, add a layer or two of cardboard under the piano. This will protect the piano from the surface of the ground and collect excess glue.

Slowly apply thin layers of thin super glue into the pin hole that holds a loose tuning pin and keep adding the glue until the pin hole is fully saturated. Do not apply too much glue to where it overflows onto the plate. To make this application easier, use micro tips to help you navigate the direction of the glue right into the pin hole. Repeat these steps for every pin hole with a loose tuning pin. Do all of this in one try because if you wait too long the glue will fully dry and the pin block will be sealed. After it is sealed, the glue will not be able to penetrate completely.

When finished applying the glue, leave this to dry for an hour or so and then you can flip the piano back to its normal upright position. Do not tune the pins until the super glue has reached a full cure, which is about 24 hours. Please make sure to wear the appropriate respirator mask, rubber gloves and eye goggles when handling any type of super glue. Also, make sure you are in a well-ventilated area.

The Following Are Do’s and Don’ts For A Successful Repair:

1. Remember to use thin super glue.

2. If the piano will be flipped, ensure you request help from two or more people, especially if the piano in question is grand or vertical. This helps to guard against injury to the piano or to yourself.

3. If the piano will be flipped, ensure the floor on which its surface is placed has a type covering. This covering helps to guard against unwanted wear and tear to the piano and preserve its aesthetic pleasures.

4. Always remember to remove the action, so that the glue does not drip through the pin block. By dripping, it could clog spaces in an unwanted manner, could deteriorate the aesthetic benefit of the piano, and could lead to unwanted exothermic reaction.

5. Try to avoid the application of excess glue to the intended surface. However, if excess glue is applied and a drip occurs, wipe this either with a Q-tip type cotton swab or with a thin piece of cloth which could be attached to the end of a screwdriver blade to allow for easy access to spills that might be lodged within tuning pins.

6. Always put on protective gear like vapor masks, eye goggles, and rubber gloves when applying or handling ca glue.

7. Always ensure the ca glue has dried up completely before continuing with your repair.

8. Always apply a thin layer of super glue to work a surface as many times as you need.

1. Do not use rags or similar big pieces of clothing material to wipe off excess glue. As the cloth could get hot and begin to smoke.

2. Do not tap the tuning pins too excessively, frequently, or for long periods. This helps to prevent spoilage to tuning pins.

How to Keep Your CA Glue Fresh and Longer-lasting:

CA glues can be stored in a refrigerator or freezer for an extended shelf life. When stored under 40°F, standard super glues have a guaranteed 30-month shelf life.

By going through the aforementioned and adhering to the same, the problems associated with repairing loose piano tuning pins will become a thing of the past.
