Can CA Glue Bond Plexiglass?

Can CA Glue Bond Plexiglass?

1 min reading time

Acrylic (Plexiglass) is a plastic made of polymethyl methacrylate, and is often used in place of glass. It is about 30 times stronger than glass, so a great alternative where there are safety concerns from the glass breaking.

However, Acrylic plastic has a low surface energy and being non porous, it's a difficult substrate for CA glue to bond. It will therefore require good surface prep.

The first step is to ensure the substrates are free from oil, grease, dirt, and dust. You should then test fit to make sure there won't be any spaces left after bonding. Apply the CA glue on one surface and Accelerator on the mating surface and carefully fit them back together.

Acrylic plastic is easier to bond to high energy surfaces like wood and most metals, but will require scuffing of surfaces when bonding to a low energy substrate like glass and other plastics. For a strong bond, we recommend out Flexible Medium-Thick CA glue which is four times stronger than standard CA.
