Make Your Own Wood Filler for Best Color Match

Make Your Own Wood Filler for Best Color Match

1 min reading time

No matter how careful one is at making accurate cuts for assembly, having gaps is an inevitable part of woodworking. You'll occasionally have gaps in your project and you would want to fill these in the most inconspicuous way possible.

While there is a variety of mica powder and other inlay material one can choose from, these rarely get a close color match to your wood. And of course they cost some extra $$! A quick and better color match fix would be to use sawdust from the wood you are working with.

Start by sanding your wood with a sander that has its own dust collection. Using a putty knife, spread and fit the saw dust into the gaps. Apply some clear thin or medium CA glue over the filled up gap, and allow a minute for it to soak in through capillary action. Pack in more sawdust until the gap is filled to a slight bulge over the surface. Once dry, sand down the bulge to an even surface level.
